Private beta

Turn a day in town into a family game.

You pick about ten tasks the night before. Tomorrow, small teams, each with a grown-up and a phone, find, count and photograph their way around town. At dinner the photos come back to your phone, task by task, and the podium names the winners.

iPhone and Android. English for now. Free during the beta.

How a day goes

  1. Plan it tonight.

Name the day and the town, then pick about ten tasks: the strangest door, the steps up to the church, a statue everyone copies. Use the 29 ready-made cards or write your own. Each team's phone joins with a short code.

About ten minutes, on the sofa.

  2. Let them loose tomorrow.

Straight away, or at ten the next morning if you choose, the adventure opens on every phone by itself. Exact answers are checked on the spot; photos and open answers come to you. A stamp lands on every finished task, and each photo plants a fanion, a little pennant, on your group's map.

No signal? Everything waits on the phone, “Saved on this phone”, until the signal returns.

  3. The reveal at dinner.

Task by task, the teams' photos and answers appear side by side on your phone. Tap Approve, Try again or Bonus. The scores count up and the podium names the winners.

Each phone needs signal once before dinner, so its photos reach yours.

  4. Keep the day.

Choose which photos go to Memories, the photo tab on every phone, and download your carnet: the photos, answers and scores in one file. The adventure stays on Home as a postcard, ready to play again.

On iPhone, save the album straight to Photos too.

Your photos stay in your group.

Farandole is run by grown-ups. Children never get an account. Nothing is posted anywhere, and there are no ads or trackers.

  • A photo is seen by the team that took it and by you. Other teams see it only if you release it after the reveal.
  • Before a photo leaves a phone, the hidden data cameras add is stripped: where, when, which device.
  • A photo's position is saved once, when it is taken or picked, to pin it on your group's map. Never shared live, never read in the background.
  • Every phone keeps its own copy. Our servers, in the EU, pass photos and answers between the phones and remove the adventure after 30 days with nothing new in it, unless you keep it.

For tourist offices, museums and towns

Put your town on a poster.

Publish a family adventure under your own name, with a short code for the poster. Families play it with their own leader. You update it when the town changes and see how many groups played. Never who.

Want to try it on your next day out?

We're in a private beta. Write to us and say which phones will play, iPhone or Android, and how many. Every phone that plays needs the app, your partner's too.

Free during the beta. A person reads every message.

Questions

Do the kids need their own phone or an account?

No. One phone per team, with a grown-up in charge of each. Children never get an account.

What if there's no signal?

Each phone needs Wi-Fi or signal to join, and again before the reveal so its photos reach yours. In between, nothing does.

What age is it for?

The tasks are written for children from about seven to read on their own; younger ones team up with someone who reads. Grown-ups set up the day and judge the photos.

What does it cost?

Nothing during the beta. We'll say clearly what costs what before that changes.

Which languages?

English for now; French and Dutch are coming. Tasks you write can be in any language.

What happens to the photos?

They stay on your group's phones; each phone keeps its own copy. Our servers pass photos and answers between the phones and remove the whole adventure after 30 days with nothing new in it: no team joining, no answer or photo, no judgement or release. Keeping it on our servers is part of the Farandole pass, free during the beta, and needs an email address. Tap Delete everything now and our copy goes as soon as your phone has signal, the photo files that night.

Does it work on Android?

Yes. During the beta, iPhones get it through Apple's TestFlight app and Android phones from a download link we send. Neither store has it yet. Saving the album straight to Photos is tested on iPhone only so far.
